As part of the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, legislation restricts the individuals who are allowed to work within an EMR system to physicians, registered nurses, and medical assistants. Most medical assistants have postsecondary training but some can be trained on-the-job working in a medical office.
